A Short History: Samoset House

After the Old Colony Railroad reached Plymouth, it built the town’s first “true hotel” — the Samoset House — in 1846 at the corner of Court and Samoset streets. Though modest by modern standards with 100 rooms, it was a grand retreat in its day, offering sea bathing, carriage rides, gas lighting, and even a bowling alley. Guests like statesman Daniel Webster and Baptist minister Calvin Philleo praised its ocean views, fine cuisine, and refined company. Described as “one of the most attractive inns in New England,” the Samoset House became a quiet but elegant haven for Boston’s summer visitors before closing in 1936 and succumbing to fire in 1939.
