Plymouth Pod #29
This week in Plymouth
Hi All! I’ll be selecting one random trivia participant to win The Plymouth Pod card, so don’t forget to play. Let’s get into it!
A Short History on Plymouth: Plymouth Beach
Plymouth Beach has been holding the line for centuries—literally! This skinny, 3-mile stretch of sand protects Plymouth Harbor from the wild Atlantic, but it hasn’t had it easy. Since the 1700s, locals have battled storms, tides, and even their own bad habits (like letting cows roam and chopping down trees on the dunes). Massive gales in 1635, 1778, and the legendary 1898 “Portland Gale” tore through the beach and left the town scrambling to patch it up—again and again. Over time, they’ve built walls, dug canals, and dropped tons of rock to keep the beach (and harbor) intact. Even today, with concrete seawalls and fancy engineered groins, Plymouth Beach still faces threats—from storms and erosion. One thing’s for sure: this little barrier has seen a lot—and it’s still standing.
Fun Fact: Back in the 1800s, Plymouth Beach was such a popular summer hangout it had a giant three-story pavilion, regular steamer service from town, and even a “house of entertainment” for mariners!
