Plymouth Pod #31

This week in Plymouth

Hi All! I hope everyone is having a great week. Before we get into it, just one quick little itsy bitsy thing…Please keep sharing this newsletter with friends and/or enemies, thanks 🙏

Trail of the Week: Sea to Shining Sea Trail

This week’s featured walk takes you on a journey from the waterfront of Plymouth Harbor all the way to the quiet shores of Billington Sea. The Sea to Shining Sea Trail is a unique blend of history, scenery, and urban exploration, connecting the Seaside Trail along the waterfront with the inland Pilgrim Trail.

The walk begins at Hedge Road near Cordage Park and follows the Seaside Trail, a paved rail-trail with sweeping ocean views. From there, you’ll descend Lothrop Street to Water Street and stroll past Plymouth’s landmarks—the Mayflower II, Plymouth Rock, and the bustle of the harbor—before crossing into Brewster Gardens. Here, Town Brook becomes your companion, winding its way inland as you follow the historic Pilgrim Trail. Native Americans once used this same route to move their camps inland during the colder months.

As the trail heads west, you’ll cross Town Brook five times, each bridge—whether steel, wood, or covered—offering its own unique view. In spring, these crossings are especially lively as herring make their annual migration upstream. Along the way, you’ll pass Jenney Grist Mill, quiet parks, and wooded paths that gradually pull you out of town and into the forest.

The final stretch carries you into Morton Park, Plymouth’s oldest protected land. Towering white pines and undisturbed wetlands create a peaceful contrast to the bustle of the harbor. The trail follows Town Brook to its source at Billington Sea, then hugs the shoreline until it reaches a sandy peninsula at Hathaway Point. Here, the water opens wide before you—a fitting end to a walk that truly lives up to its name.

Whether you’re drawn by the history, the varied landscapes, or the simple pleasure of crossing town by foot, the Sea to Shining Sea Trail offers a little of everything. Full details about the trail linked here
