Trail of the Week: Wompatuck State Park

At 3,500 acres, Wompatuck State Park is one of the South Shore’s largest outdoor playgrounds, with 12 miles of paved bike paths plus trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. You’ll also find seasonal campsites, fishing, and kayaking on the 136-acre Aaron River Reservoir.

Fun fact: scattered across the woods are over 100 decommissioned WWII bunkers from the park’s days as the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex. Another highlight is the Burbank Boulder, a glacial erratic that balances on three points. The park also contains Prospect Hill, Hingham’s highest point, and connects directly to the MBTA via the Whitney Spur Rail Trail.

Wildlife abounds—deer, coyotes, bobcats, turtles, and more than 250 bird species—while spring brings a bloom of mountain laurel and pink dogwood. Trails range from a gentle 1-mile “Healthy Heart Loop” to a 4-mile trek past ponds and old rail beds, making it a great spot for both casual strolls and longer adventures.
